How to pursue who you want to be a little seriously

How do you get closer to who you want to be, beyond what you're already doing?

There's the idea of 'Identity-based' habits that James Clear talks about. I think this idea is underrated and one should happily go overboard with adopting the identity of the habits one aims to achieve. Why?

  • It makes it more fun

  • It keeps you more involved, thereby driving your habits further

This might seem pretentious but who's asking? You're answerable to yourself and no one else (in this regard). So let's dive right into it.

Step 1: Choose your identity

If you've decided you want to lose weight, you take on the persona of an athlete (because you ARE). Fall in love with the archetype of an athlete; doesn't matter how fit you are right now.

Choose your favourite athletes and consume your favourite bits about them - their interviews, their beliefs, slap some posters on your wall 🤷‍♂️ GO ALL IN!

Step 2: Build habits based on your new identity

What are the habits you would love to have as an athlete? Start with one. Go easy on yourself. Every athlete started with the basics. Here are some ideas:

  • Aim for 3000 steps a day / Walk for 2-3km

  • Have a sleep routine i.e. sleep at the same time

  • If feasible, change your attire as well i.e. wear some professional clothing to kick things up a notch 🏃‍♂️🎽

Step 3: Believe in consistency

Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither was anyone's career. Trust in the process so many top performers did throughout their career - Show up everyday and do the work. Results compound over time. Until your habits become a lifestyle, believe in the process after which the process becomes you.
