Stop Watching YouTube Videos - Do This Instead

You need to stop watching YouTube videos.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't literally mean that, but ask yourself this question - "Do you remember the last video(s) you watched?"

Do you remember:

  • The key message

  • Points of action

  • Anything useful at all?

If you say yes (and have managed to apply those takeaways then you're in the <1% group who does)

Select What You Consume And Why You Choose To

If your argument is "I watch for fun" bear with me

Information Overload is real.

Think about a typical day and all the content your brain goes through - books, videos (YouTube, Instagram, Reddit etc.), emails, zoom meetings, tv shows.

That's massive and there's a reason we're so drained at the end of the day. With selective consumption you can reduce some of the fatigue. Here's how:

#1. Why Are You Watching This Video

Knowledge or Leisure - your choice, but be aware

Want to watch a funny video? go ahead.

Watching a video on productivity? go ahead -

#2. Don't Let Good Videos Die

10 minutes spent on a video might seem moot.

The value of the video might be more than 10 minutes. It could be the hallmark of a lifestyle change / introduction to a new idea or domain.

If you found it useful, bookmark it. Revisit the bookmark over the weekend - deep dive - take notes.

#3. Create A Library

Bookmarks are normally forgotten.

The number of videos that truly impact you might be minimal but they're worth documenting. The notes, essays and ideas from it may be helpful for life.

It could be idea for a book, a speech, help you get out of a rut? anything.

Having a database of these will always be helpful. Here's a snip of one such video:

As you can see, there’s a video - my notes below it (it’s much more of course).

Try this idea out and let me know how it works for you.
